The most effective preventive measure is the identification of susceptibles by a careful history of prior or current eczema or atopic dermatitis in the vaccinee or household or similar close physical contacts to the vaccinee.
Individuals with current or prior eczema or atopic dermatitis should not be vaccinated. Candidates for vaccination who have household or similar close physical contacts that have eczema or atopic dermatitis should also not be vaccinated in non-emergency situations.
In established eczema vaccinatum, appropriate skin care is recommended to diminish bacterial contamination of the vaccination sites. Consultation with a dermatologist familiar with this disease may assist in developing appropriate measures to accomplish this goal.
