Instructions to vaccinees include:

Care of the vaccination site to avoid contamination by bacteria via:

•  Frequent hand washing
•  Fingernail trimming
•  Swathing of infants’ hands with cotton batting to prevent scratching of the vaccination site

Local use of prophylactic antimicrobials without evidence of infection is not recommended as resistant organisms may then dominate.
