In normal persons, the primary and implanted lesions are characteristic of a normal vaccination and easily identified.
Please visit the Eczema Vaccinatum page and the
Vaccinia Keratitis page for the diagnosis of eczema vaccinatum
and extensive skin disease, and vaccinia keratitis.
In most instances, laboratory tests are unnecessary. If the lesions
are extensive, immunologic investigation is warranted in addition to virologic studies. In some cases, particularly
in individuals that lack specific contact information, it may be necessary to establish the etiology of a given lesion
by viral study to differentiate it from other diseases.
