Avian Influenza
Avian Influenza - Situation in Egypt - WHO Update - March 12
The Egyptian Ministry of Health and Population has announced a new human case of avian influenza A(H5N1) virus infection. The case was confirmed by the Egyptian Central Public Health Laboratory and by the US Naval Medical Research Unit No.3 (NAMRU-3).

Embargo of Birds from Specified Countries - March 2
Based on concerns about highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 virus and its potential to cause illness in humans, CDC and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) have taken steps to prevent importation of birds and unprocessed bird products from countries with the virus in domestic poultry. Kuwait has been added to the embargo.

Weekly Report: Influenza Summary Update - March 9
During week 9 (February 25 – March 3, 2007), influenza activity decreased slightly in the United States. Data from the U.S. World Health Organization (WHO) and National Respiratory and Enteric Virus Surveillance System (NREVSS) collaborating laboratories indicated a decline in activity for the third consecutive week; 22.5% of specimens tested positive for influenza this week. ILI data was above baseline for the eleventh week this season but is declining. Twenty-five states reported widespread influenza activity; 16 states and New York City reported regional influenza activity; six states and the District of Columbia reported local influenza activity; and three states reported sporadic influenza activity. The reporting of widespread or regional influenza activity decreased from 44 states for week 8 to 41 states for week 9. The percent of deaths due to pneumonia and influenza remained below baseline level.

West Nile Virus
FDA Approves First Fully Automated Test to Screen for West Nile Virus in Blood and Tissue Donors - FDA Press Release - March 2The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today announced the approval of a license supplement for the first fully automated West Nile Virus (WNV) nucleic acid test for donor screening. The Procleix WNV Assay on the Procleix TIGRIS system is licensed to detect the virus' genetic material in plasma specimens from individual donors of blood, tissue and organs, and other living donors. It is not intended for use on cord blood specimens or as an aid in the diagnosis of WNV infection.

Food Safety Threats
Salmonellosis - Outbreak Investigation, February 2007 - March 7
As of March 7th at 12 PM EST, 425 persons infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Tennessee have been reported to CDC from 44 states. Among 351 patients for whom clinical information is available, 71 (20%) were hospitalized. No deaths have been attributed to this infection. Onset dates, which are known for 301 patients, ranged from August 1, 2006 to February 16, 2007, and 67% of these illnesses began after December 1, 2006.
