WHO Facilitates Influenza Vaccine Technology Transfer to Developing Countries - WHO Press Release - April 24
As part of a concerted effort to ensure more equitable access to a potential pandemic influenza vaccine, six developing countries are being awarded grants to establish in-country manufacturing capacity for influenza vaccine. The countries are Brazil, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Thailand and Viet Nam.

Global Stockpile of H5N1 Vaccine 'Feasible' - WHO Press Release - April 26
Countries and vaccine manufacturers agreed on Wednesday in a meeting at WHO that it may be feasible to create a stockpile of H5N1 vaccine, and to separately develop a mechanism to ensure broader access to pandemic influenza vaccine for developing countries in the advent of a pandemic.

Weekly Report: Influenza Summary Update - April 27
During week 16 (April 15 – 21, 2007), influenza activity continued to decrease in the United States. Data from the U.S. World Health Organization (WHO) and National Respiratory and Enteric Virus Surveillance System (NREVSS) collaborating laboratories indicated a decrease in the percentage of specimens testing positive for influenza. Other surveillance systems also indicated a decrease in influenza activity. The percentage of visits for ILI to sentinel providers decreased during week 16 and was below the national baseline for the fourth consecutive week. Five states reported regional influenza activity; 10 states reported local influenza activity; the District of Columbia, New York City, and 31 states reported sporadic influenza activity; and four states reported no influenza activity. The number of jurisdictions reporting widespread or regional influenza activity decreased from 11 for week 15 to five for week 16. The percent of deaths due to pneumonia and influenza remained below baseline level.

QuickStats: Percentage of Hospitals with Staff Members Trained to Respond to Selected Terrorism-Related Diseases or Exposures --- National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey, United States, 2003--2004 - MMWR Weekly - April 27
During 2003--2004, the percentage of hospitals with emergency department staff members with bioterrorism-preparedness training for certain related diseases or exposures varied from 52.3% for hemorrhagic fever to 86.0% for smallpox.

HHS Releases Plan for Development and Purchase of Medical Countermeasures - April 20
The “Public Health Emergency Medical Countermeasures Enterprise (PHEMCE) Implementation Plan for Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Threats” lays out the future course for prioritizing HHS’ acquisition of vaccines, drugs and medical diagnostic tests, including purchases made under Project BioShield.
