Embargo of Birds from Specified Countries
Based on concerns about highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 virus and its potential to cause illness in humans, CDC and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) have taken steps to prevent importation of birds and bird products from countries with the virus: Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, South Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, Kazakhstan, Romania, Russia, Turkey, Ukraine and Nigeria.

On February 8, 2006, CDC issued an amendment adding Nigeria to its current embargo after H5N1 was confirmed in poultry.

Interim Guidance for Airline Flight Crews and Persons Meeting Passengers Arriving from Areas with Avian Influenza
This updated interim guidance is intended to inform airline flight crews and personnel meeting arriving passengers about appropriate precautions in the event they must interact with a person suspected of having H5N1 avian influenza.

Interim Guidance for Airline Cleaning Crew, Maintenance Crew, and Baggage/Package and Cargo Handlers for Airlines Returning from Areas Affected by Avian Influenza A (H5N1)
This updated interim guidance is intended to inform personnel who clean, maintain, or remove baggage/packages from commercial and cargo airlines about appropriate precautions related to avian influenza A (H5N1).

Seasonal Influenza
Flu Activity
During week 5 (January 29 – February 4, 2006), influenza activity continued approximately at the same level as recent weeks in the United States. Three hundred thirty-three specimens (13.9%) tested by U.S. World Health Organization (WHO) and National Respiratory and Enteric Virus Surveillance System (NREVSS) collaborating laboratories were positive for influenza.

MMWR Early Release: Influenza Vaccination of Health-Care Personnel
This report summarizes recommendations of the Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee (HICPAC) and the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) concerning influenza vaccination of health-care personnel (HCP) in the United States. These recommendations apply to HCP in acute care hospitals, nursing homes, skilled nursing facilities, physician's offices, urgent care centers, and outpatient clinics, and to persons who provide home health care and emergency medical services.

CDC Policy on Unused Smallpox Vaccine
CDC has developed this policy on unused smallpox vaccine in response to questions raised by several smallpox vaccination programs and to provide a recommendation on maintaining a readiness to respond to an attack involving the use of smallpox.
