EMERGING INFECTIOUS DISEASE JOURNAL
The Emerging Infectious Disease (EID) journal provides recognition of new and
re-emerging infections and understanding of factors involved in disease emergence,
prevention, and elimination. It also represents the scientific communications
component of CDC's efforts against the threat of emerging infections. See the

WEST NILE VIRUS (WNV)
2004 WNV Activity in the United States
Provides updated information on West Nile virus activity in
the United States. One thousand six hundred and four cases have
been reported to CDC this season as of September 21, 2004. Of the
1,604 cases, 559 were reported as West Nile meningitis or
encephalitis (neuroinvasive disease), 652 were reported as
West Nile fever (milder disease), and 393 were clinically
unspecified at this time. Forty-eight deaths have been reported.
