INFLUENZA UPDATES

Update on Flu Allocation – HAN Message
CDC continues to work with state and local health officials to make vaccine available to high risk individuals as designated by the Advisory Committee for Immunization Practices (ACIP).  However, CDC is aware that geographic differences in vaccine distribution and demand remain across the nation.  As CDC has done since the influenza vaccine shortage was announced in early October, we will continue to work with the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO) to assess the vaccine supply situation to ensure that all high priority individuals wishing to receive vaccine have the opportunity to do so.  If subsequent additional adjustments in distribution appear warranted, they will be made
at that time.  Please see attached file for more details.

HHS Purchases 1.2 Million Doses of Flu Vaccine
HHS Secretary Tommy G. Thompson announced on December 7th that the Food and Drug Administration authorized the use of GlaxoSmithKline influenza vaccine, Fluarix, in the United States under an Investigational New Drug (IND) application. Additionally, HHS has reached an agreement with the company to purchase 1.2 million doses of the vaccine for distribution to areas most in need.

Protecting Against the Flu: Advice for Caregivers of Children
Less Than 6 Months Old
Because children are at increased risk of getting severe illness from influenza, CDC recommends that all children 6 to 23 months old get a flu shot. However, flu vaccine is not approved for use in children less than 6 months. Also, influenza antiviral medications are not approved for use in children younger than 6 months. Because these children cannot get a vaccine or antiviral medications, but are at higher risk for serious flu-related complications, safeguarding them from influenza virus infection is
especially important. This fact sheet provides advice to help protect
children less than 6 months from the flu.

Guidance for Prevention and Control of Influenza in the Peri-
and Postpartum Settings – UPDATED
Pregnant women have been shown to be at increased risk of hospitalization from complications secondary to influenza infection. For infection control measures for hospitalized pregnant and recently-delivered women and their infants, please see the link below. These guidelines were developed for clinicians and public health officials. However, there is insufficient data on use of influenza antiviral drugs in pregnant or recently-delivered women, and CDC is unable to provide guidance on antiviral use in these persons.
