The Post-Event Stage

Kevin Teale
Communications Director
Iowa Department of Health

The post-event phase is the time to recognize your team's hard work and any lessons learned for the future. Your goal is to take care of your team and to prepare for a new state of readiness. In the days following the event, you may have faced some hard but important questions…questions like how do we handle any communication problems that may come up both internally and externally. Or how can we improve our performance during the next emergency. In the time following a crisis, research shows that people are more open to important learning opportunities. The post-event phase is a great time to present key stakeholders, as well as your staff, with any new information that came to light during the crisis, that will lower their risk during the future.
