Epidemiological Investigation

The principal purposes of epidemiological investigations are to:

  1. Characterize cases and confirm the outbreak.
  2. Identify the causative agent, source, and mode of transmission.
  3. Identify cases and case contacts through surveillance and contact tracing.
  4. Identify risk factors.
  5. Develop control and prevention strategies.
  6. Monitor and evaluate response to interventions.
